Campus St. Jean Science Building Concept Design
Campus St. Jean is a unique French-language component of the University of Alberta and is an important presence of la Francophonie in Western Canada. It serves as a cultural and linguistic centre for Northern Alberta and engages the community, locally in Edmonton’s “French quarter”, in the civic realm, nationally and internationally. The culture of “community involvement” and fostering of “casual interaction” is a hallmark of Campus St. Jean. Interdisciplinary collaboration is inherent through innovative programs and diverse disciplines, all within the campus.
HFKS Architects as Prime Consultant, with Diamond Schmitt Architects as subconsultant, undertook siting, massing studies, laboratory module configurations, redevelopment and addition planning, cost review and scheduling. ECS Corp. provided update of space program based on prior documents. The new 5,200 m² facility with additional renovations and backfill to approximately 1,650 m² of existing space accommodates instructional and research laboratories, classrooms, student spaces and faculty offices.
The project is being designed to LEED® Silver NC.
